Your post and several others in this thread point up the importance of 
context in interpreting and researching ambiguous or polysemous terms.

Would the original poster (sorry, I forget who it was) be so kind as to 
provide more context? Locale, time period, other flora/fauna mentioned, 
climate, topography, etc.

The more you help, the better the results will be.
