This a reminder that the deadline for submissions for the 2007 BASEES
Postgraduate Conference:
"Reactions and Reinventions: Changing Critical Genres in
Slavonic and East European Literature, Culture and Politics since 1840." is
NOVEMBER 1st 2007.

The conference will be held at the University of Glasgow on Saturday
December 8, 2007. Part-bursaries for travel and accommodation may be
offered to participants.

Paper proposals are invited from postgraduate students ONLY. Those
interested in simply attending the event should also contact the
organisers via the emails listed below. The conference will consist of
three panel sessions and one keynote speech (theme: 'getting published'),
split into morning, afternoon and early evening sessions. A buffet lunch
will be provided for participants at the interval. Each panel will
comprise 3 or 4 postgraduate papers, lasting 15 to 20 minutes each. The
panel sessions will focus on literature, politics, and sensory culture
respectively. A leading academic from a relevant field will be invited to
chair each panel.

The conference aims to provide a forum for YOU, as UK-based postgraduates,
to (i)interact with peers from different institutions and research fields,
(ii)present research-based papers and (iii)engage in fresh, cross
disciplinary discussion and debate. More broadly, we are convinced that
critical feedback from colleagues and peers, including those working in
different disciplinary fields, is crucial to the formation of robust and
effective academic skills within the postgraduate community. With this in
mind, the call for papers is designed to appeal to a broad range of
specialisations (literary, historical, sociological, cultural, and
political).

Please send your proposed title and an abstract of no more than 200 words
to Muireann Maguire (mm504 at cam.ac.uk), indicating clearly which of the
three panels you would like to be considered. The deadline for submissions
is 1 November 2007.

Details of the three panels are given below:

Panel 1: Gender in Russian literature since 1840. Papers are invited which
consider any aspect of gender in Russian Literature from 1840 to the
present day. This panel is interested in both the constructions of
masculinity and femininity and is keen to discuss the work of female, as
well as male, writers. Discussant: Professor Stephen White (Glasgow)

Panel 2: Back to the Cold War? Russia, Eastern Europe and the West in the
21st Century. Papers are invited which look at various aspects of Russia's
relations with the West, Central and Eastern Europe and/or the 'near
abroad'. Discussant: tbc

Panel 3: Alternative Aesthetics: Approaches to Interpreting Russian and
East European Culture through Smell, Taste and Touch. Papers are invited
which examine Russian and Eastern European culture from unexpected
perspectives: e.g. textures, textiles, cuisine, consumer products, music
and film culture. This panel welcomes fresh and varied appraisal of what
makes Russian and Eastern European culture distinctive. Discussant: Dr Alex
Harrington (Durham)
