Gogol Translator

[MATTHEW P WALKER]

Nabokov, who was notoriously difficult to please in these matters, actually liked Guerney's translation enough to recommend it in his Gogol book (he even asked Guerney to translate his own Dar, but balked when the latter had the temerity to demand half the royalties). Maguire and P & V are both good, but I think Guerney can still hold its own against any of them, which is pretty amazing considering it was done over sixty years ago. It's available in a revised edition from Yale UP.
