Lest we forget, there are elements in the Slavic world that
consider(ed) Ukraine and the language as precisely that, a region (the
very name confirms that as well as political history) and a dialect of
a single language. So the analogy is dated, but not wholly invalid.
Your post points to some definitely curious usage. Terms of derision
are traditionally attached to another ethnie or nationality. The
Anglo-Saxon world "takes French leave" when we French prefer to "filer
à l'anglaise."
