Dear Professor Hill,

The contemporary standard Russian transliteration of WElls's name is  
not "Gerbert Vell's" but Uells. (Ouells). See the article on him in  
Russian: http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Герберт_Уэльс
Sytin published Wells's collected works in Russian in 1908-9. The  
Introduction was written by Kornei Chukovsky.
In the 1920s his name was spelt as Oul's (with one l and a soft sign).
