Russian Tea Cakes - are they Russian?

I looked into this in the past. From what I remember, they date back
to the middle ages in Europe and were likely introduced by the Arabs.
They exist under many different names, including Mexican Wedding
Cakes, and are found in slightly different forms throughout Europe.
So, while they apparently were introduced into Russia somewhere around
the 18th century, they aren't of Russian origin.
