Seeing the Eötvös opera here, I might add that the American composer Thomas
Pasatieri (1945--) has composed two operas based on Chekhov: The Seagull
(1972) and Three Sisters (1986). Kenward Elmslie provided the libretto for
both. A CD is available of The Seagull, the p/v score of which has also
been published.
