Would the Russian academics be so kind as to explain this in terms that 
an American academic would understand?

Are we speaking of...
Courses in the major?
Individualized (independent-study) courses?
Electives?
Something else I haven't thought of?

The undergraduate grade transcript I'm working on lists 21 such courses 
out of a total of almost 70.
