Thompson is exactly what I'm trying to avoid in this
particular case (although I like it) because it's
too detailed, too analytical, too long for someone
who wants to know just the main facts and personalities,
preferably with illustrations.

I hope there are others on this list who are interested
in such a book (i.e. I hope I'm not just irritating the
whole community :) and that there is someone who knows 
such a book.
