In this searing follow-up to his Oscar-winning Burnt by the Sun, 
writer-director Nikita Mikhalkov reprises his role as Soviet Col. 
Sergei Kotov, a man who escapes prison, cheats death and re-enrolls to 
fight the Germans. Little does he know that his wife (Viktoriya 
Tolstoganova) and daughter (Nadezhda Mikhalkova), whom he long believed 
dead, are still alive -- and that his nemesis (Oleg Menshikov) is under 
Stalin's orders to find him.
