I suppose that one answer to John Langran's question might be 'not necessarily'.  My understanding is that the use of forms such as бабуль (which may or may not be a vocative: there are different opinions on this) depends on such factors as the degree of urgency with which the speaker is trying to catch the attention of the listener and the personal preference of the speaker.  Others may be able to define the factors more precisely.
