On the Windows side, one of the first options I set when installing a 
new version of Word is to disable its automatic language detection 
"feature" (Tools | Language | Set Language | Detect language 
automatically). Then it will mark each chunk of text according to the 
keyboard in effect at the moment -- if you're using the Cyrillic 
keyboard, it treats the text as Russian, but if you're using the English 
keyboard, it treats it as English.
