I'm sure you've already thought of these, but Bulgakov's Heart of a Dog and Fatal Eggs leap to mind.  Also the "master breeder" in Voinovich's Chonkin.  Bogdanov's Red Star refers to Haeckel.  None of this is the mainstream stuff you asked for, of course!  --Eric
