Many thanks to all who responded to my questions about bell-bottoms-wearing 
ex-sailors/Cheka agents, for your very helpful ideas and useful background 
information.

I may have to appeal to the list's goodwill again in the future, as I am 
currently struggling with a particularly intractable and enigmatic 
Aleksandr Grin narrator from a short story due to appear in the same 
collection as 'Spiriticheskii seans'.
