Travel/Study to Kyrgyzstan

Colleagues:

A parent has contacted me about his child's impending trip to Kyrgyzstan.  Given the latest travel warnings, including a warning to avoid all non-essential travel there, he is very worried and does not want the student to go.  Does anyone out there have any information or insight on this?  I'd appreciate any thoughts or information you might have.
