Dear all,

Not all of you will have known Stanley Mitchell personally, but many of you will know his outstanding translation of ONEGIN, a true masterpiece.

I am writing to pass on the terrible news that he died last night. He collapsed on his way home after attending a philosophy forum. He was taken to hospital, but he died within an hour or so. It seems likely that this was the result of a heart attack, but it will be investigated further.

I will write again when I know details of the funeral.

Stanley had been working during his last days on a translation of 'The Bronze Horseman'. I had commissioned him to do this for an anthology of Russian poetry in translation that I am compiling.

Yours,

Robert
