I've just read Robert Chandler's review in the Spectator, and cannot
recommend the review itself too highly either!

Excellent!

Dear all,

The 28 July issue of the Spectator includes my review of a recent book about
Russian wooden churches:
http://www.spectator.co.uk/issues/28-july-2012/on-the-verge-of-extinction

I can't recommend this book too highly. It is not just a collection of
pretty pictures (though the photographs are remarkable), but a book produced
with real intelligence and imagination. The texts accompanying the pictures
are from a huge variety of sources and they are very enlightening indeed:
about everything from Russian peasant life before the Revolution to the
conduct of Soviet anti-religious campaigns.

The book is, above all, a reminder of the desperate need for more attention
to be focussed on the conservation of these precious but fragile buildings.

All the best,

Robert
