In the following sentence, how do you understand the queried term? On 
its face, it looks like the wrong word.

The context is that workers exposed to the compound in question (sorry, 
can't name it) are usually also exposed to other potential carcinogens, 
so it's hard to tell what contribution each compound makes to overall 
risk. Controlled experiments isolate each compound and allow accurate 
risk assessment.
