Dear Collective Wisdom, 



I have just been reading about the 18 th -century German scholar Johann Alexander Döderlein who, according to Wikipedia ( http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Alexander_D%C3%B6derlein ), wrote the first book about a Russian work of art (an icon in a church in Bavaria), in 1724.
