Things like this don't really have sources.  If you are trying to see where
a particular author found this motif, that may welll be possible.  But in
general terms - no.  The signpost or stone or other marker at a crossroads
appears in a number of cultures.  If anyone can trace specific uses of a
praticular motif, it would probably be Will Ryan.  Hopefully he will also
reply to this query.
