Chekhov quotation?

A book of excerpts from Chekhov came out recently in France, called Conseils ? un ?crivain [Advice to a writer]. It quotes him as follows:

Ambitieux, amis fr?res de plume, soyez-le, mais ne vous y prenez pas n'importe comment

[Yes, my writer friends, be ambitious, but don't set about it just haphazardly/aimlessly/anywhichway].

Can anyone help me find the original wording?
