To slightly adjust a t-crossing, these names are not matrilineal, but, 
as Bob R. notes, matronymic.  They were never handed down from mother to 
daughter.  This issue has been discussed at length on the Jewishgen web 
site.  There is also considerable skepticism that names like Berlin or 
Pariser were taken from the actual cities.
