Gogol's rank

Dear Colleagues,

After a discussion of The Nose, a student wanted to know whether Gogol  
himself had merited a particular rank during his time as a civil  
servant.  Would any of you have information about this? Or about a  
source I could consult?

And another question: was there compulsory military service for  
non-serfs in the 1830s Russia?
