sex on the blackboard

*If I were ever in charge of "diversity training/"reeducation(?)" I would
have all non-linguists write out a hundred times:*

*"Gender is a grammatical category and has nothing to do with sex"*

Several times, I’ve been cautioned that writing about sex can be one
way of avoiding its ramifications in the real world. Professor Orr’s
posting is an eloquent reminder of the wisdom of that reproach.

Please forgive the incestuous metaphor, but *this* is one area in which
repetition should not be the mother of learning.
