Hidatsa m/w are indeed one phoneme.  In addition to John's
advice/comments, (which also correspond to my recollection of resonant
distribution) you might want to check with Doug Parks and/or Wes Jones.
Doug is doing the synonymy for the Handbook and Wes has field experience
with Hidatsa and can inform you on how much free variation there is in the
names.  You might also want to check for long vs. short vowels, since NONE
of the early sources bothered with it.
