Hayden (1862, p. 426) has "The Mandans, or Mi-ah'ta-nes [dot above h;
long e], "people on the bank"(of the river), as they call themselves".
Is this analyzable?

And (p. 428) "Nearly all of the Mandans speak the Minnitaree language,
and many of them are familiar with the Dakota and Arikara tongues, but
very few if any of the surrounding tribes have acquired that of the
Mandans."
