From John.Koontz at colorado.edu Mon Dec 4 06:51:28 2000 From: John.Koontz at colorado.edu (Koontz John E) Date: Sun, 3 Dec 2000 23:51:28 -0700 Subject: Web Fonts Message-ID: Those who are interested in the possibility of using the Standard Siouan fonts on the Web might wish to look at page: http://spot.colorado.edu/~koontz/pfrtest/pfr.htm This points to a simple page with links to four test (readme) pages. This is distinctly a first pass at approaching this problem using the Bitstream Portable Font Resource approach. PFR files are created with the Bitstream WebFont Wizzard, see http://www.bitstream.com/categories/products/webfonttools/webfontmaker/index.html I am using a 10 fonts or 10 days (whichever comes first) trial version of the WebFont Wizzard, and I've made four fonts, for the four variants (roman, bold roman, italic, and bold italic) of SSDoulos (Standard Siouan Doulos, or proportional serifed). Both the pfr files and the readme pages were generated by the Wizzard. The Bitstream PFR approach is supposed to work for both Netscape and MS Internet Explorer browsers. Netscape supports it natively; MSIE requires some assistance from the server to get the relevant tools downloaded into your browser. I'm not sure if that assistance is actually there inCU's web server for spot.colorado.edu, but I'm seeing Siouanist characters using MSIE 5.5 under Windows 98. I'm not sure what you'll see. If you are interested in looking at these pages and want to report back, I suggest reporting directly to me at john.koontz at colorado.edu, as not everyone on the list will be interested in a lot of traffic on this. I will naturally summarize things later. Note that in generating these files I renamed the SSDoulosRoman* set from my original poor choice of StandardSiouan*. Also, the Wizzard tries to get you to limit the fonts to particular URL venues in case you feel proprietary. I've tried to circumvent this by assigning them to http: and https:, which should cover just about anything (or not work at all). This is only relevant if you want to snag the files and try to use them yourselves, of course. This is fine with me, and, as far as I know, SIL, too. The fonts were made with the SIL TrueType Font Foundary tool. Note also that the Bitstream site suggests that you have the Windows font smoothing add-on (free) installed. Check the Bitstream site for information. The initial page was somewhat slow in coming up. If all goes well, I will try to convert the other Siouanist fonts, though I'll need to buy the full version of the software to go much further! The users don't need to purchase anything, but may have to put up with various nuisances as yet unsuspected ... John Koontz From John.Koontz at colorado.edu Wed Dec 6 05:59:47 2000 From: John.Koontz at colorado.edu (Koontz John E) Date: Tue, 5 Dec 2000 22:59:47 -0700 Subject: Standard Siouan Web Fonts Message-ID: I have been able to successfully test the Standard Siouan Web fonts (Portable Font Resources) with Microsoft Internet Explorer. They should work with Netscape browsers, too, under Windows and probably under Unix, but I have yet to test this. To see an example, connect to: http://spot.colorado.edu/~koontz/pfrtest/pfr.htm Only the Manuscript face examples work. The Doulos examples don't. I think the reason is that each pfr file has to have specified a limiting URL, naming the site at which the font works. I tried to finesse thiswith the Doulos face fonts by naming the URL http:, but that doesn't seem to work, at least not with the demo version of Bitstream WebFont Wizzard. They can't sell as many real copies of the Wizzard if they let you unleash fonts like that, and, of course, they have a legitimate fear that someone might unleash some of their own commercial fonts for general Web use. Anyway, with the Manuscript face fonts I specified a limit of http://spot.colorado.edu, which worked. Of course, they won't work for anyone else, I'm afraid. That is, you should be able to see them in my pages, but not to download them and make pages of your own with them. Needless to say, now that it appears that this technology works, I hope to proceed beyond the demo version of the Wizzard, preferably to something that permits no-restrictive URLs, and, when I have, I will release pfr files for the Siouan fonts. In the meantime, anyone who has a Windows system in which the fonts have been installed by more mundane processes - download, unzip, install with the Control Pannel Fonts tool - can see these fonts in a Web page. The browsing party installs the fonts, and the page producing party specifies the use of the fonts using directives or CSS. I won't go further into the details here. If you want to create up to ten pfr fonts yourself, you can do this with the demo version of the Bitstream WebFont Wizzard, available to anyone from the Bitstream site http://www.bitstream.com and go to Products > WebFont Products There is also some useful information at http://www.truedoc.com You also need the Standard Siouan (or other) fonts from http://www.colorado.edu/linguistics/cesnalps/Services/ssfonts.htm John Koontz From John.Koontz at colorado.edu Wed Dec 6 17:19:39 2000 From: John.Koontz at colorado.edu (Koontz John E) Date: Wed, 6 Dec 2000 10:19:39 -0700 Subject: Siouan Web Fonts and Netscape Message-ID: The properly made SS Manuscript fonts also work with Netscape 4.7* for Windows and SunOS Unix. They don't work with the new Netscape 6, perhaps because it's still under development. I've only tested Netscape under WindowsNT (American). The SS Doulos fonts that didn't work earlier still don't work. The problem is probably that non-restrictive URL I tried. Incidentally, I've noticed that SIL's Encore Fonts tool has a new version out that is more graphically based. The TypeCaster program in Encore Fonts is what I used to make the Siouan fonts in their TrueType format. There is also a newer version of TavulteSoft's KeyMan out.
