Yes, "inchoative" is one of those terms I always had to look up again (usually
twice) whenever I encountered it in the literature.  Another such term is
"aorist".  "Irrealis" isn't much better, although it should be; it includes so
many different things in different languages.  I think "vertitive" is pretty
deeply ensconced in Siouan linguistics now and would be hard to replace.  :-)
