Thanks to everyone who helped--with negative evidence--on the etym. of
HOPPAS. One possibility is that the word is from Eng. 'hopper', a basket
or other container carried on the back and used to hold seed for sowing,
et al. R-dropping explains the lack of -r, but how to explain the -s
(unless it was orig. the pl. marker)?
