Lakota chaNnuNpa and irregularity.

It's the same root all right.  I don't know why but Dakotan  ?uN  'to do' and  i?uN  'to do with; use'  have fallen together, the second losing its instrument prefix (retained virtually everywhere else).  Then the one is conjugated with "regular" wa-, ya- while the other has the conservative m-, n-.  The glottal with the inclusive is one of those sporadic things.  It stays in some of the languages and disappears in others (incl. Dhegiha dialects), but its presence vs. absence doesn't signal a distinct root, just a different stem, the second of which ought to have the "semantically present" but morphologically absent instrumental i- 'with'.  'To use' is really just 'to do with'.

        Not the same root.  the 1st plural of wa?uN is unk'uNpi, while
that of mun is unkunpi.  the glottal stop is real.

        "not recoverable" is a matter of definition.  The fact that they
all treat the two cases as different means that they know in some sense
that they aren't the same environment.  I think the ONLY exception to the
b- rule is the causative, though I haven't actually inventoried
everything.
