Usually women and as much men. They are ring brooches.
Ladies still use them and they can be bought many places.
Used by Europeans to hold shank buttons in place.
They are pinned into blouses all over the Eastern US.

Now, does anyone know the Hochunk or other Siouan terms for ladies  
hair binders?
