IMPORTANT INFORMATION: CONFERENCE LODGING

Iren,

Thanks for the heads-up. Roads along the flood plain of the "Mighty MO" can indeed experience flooding sometimes. If anyone should find that motels in the two towns mentioned are out of rooms, another possibility is St. Joseph, MO. It's on the way to the conference from Kansas City International airport and there are plenty of motels in all price ranges. The route to the conference from there is US highway 56 west to Kansas state highway 7, then north to White Cloud. Once you are within the state of Kansas you can call 511 for road closing information.

Take heart in the fact that we are experiencing the same conditions that Indian People in the Missouri Valley did for generations in the Spring of each year.

Best,

Bob

Subject: IMPORTANT INFORMATION: CONFERENCE LODGING

(Dear all:

Saul asked me to pass this information on to you.)

Greetings to all,

We are writing to inform conference attendees about how anticipated flooding along the Missouri River will affect lodging arrangements for the Siouan conference later this month. After consultation with tribal chairman Tim Rhodd and the manager of the Eagle’s Nest motel, we are recommending that all conference attendees who have reserved rooms at the Eagle’s Nest motel cancel these reservations immediately and make reservations in Hiawatha, KS, or Falls City, NE, at the motels listed below. The reason for this is the imminent flooding, which will make roads impassable, requiring extensive detours to get from the Eagle’s Nest motel on the east side of the river to the conference location at the tribal complex on the west side of the river.

We apologize for this inconvenience and extra expense to conference attendees. While there was minor flooding in the area last year, we had no way of anticipating this year’s expected extensive flooding caused by the Corps of Engineers releasing water from upstream. We were pleased that the tribe was able to offer such discounted conference rates at the Eagle’s Nest motel, and we were looking forward to conference business supporting this tribal enterprise. We are sorry to report that the motels in Hiawatha, KS, and Falls City, NE, are not able to match the conference rate at the tribe’s Eagle’s Nest motel. Nevertheless, the rates at these motels seem reasonable and should provide good accommodations for conference attendees. Both Hiawatha and Falls City are approximately 20 miles from the conference location.

Please note that those with reservations at the casino cabins do NOT need to cancel their reservations, since the casino cabins are just a mile south of the tribal complex. However, all attendees should plan their travel routes to avoid highways running through river lowlands, including but not limited to 159 from MO to NE and 7 from NE to KS.
