Saponi Name Origin and Meaning

My ignorance of names and naming customs is vast, so I apologize if the 
following is a dumb comment.  However, At least some of the time, the word 
we have in English for a tribal name is not from the language of that 
tribe at all, but rather the result of asking someone "who lives over 
there?" and getting the answer in the language of the neighbors, not the 
self-designation of the tribe.  Is there any point in even trying to 
figure out a Siouan etymology for this name?
