seeks to hire a linguist specializing in typologically-informed field <br>

linguistics.<br>

The appointment will be a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor <br>

level, effective July 1, 2014. Candidates must have expertise in the <br>

analysis of linguistic structure, a theoretical specialization in one or <br>

more subfields of linguistics, experience in language documentation and <br>

description, and research experience with one or more languages or language <br>

families. We are especially interested in candidates with expertise in <br>

technical fieldwork methodologies, work with lesser-known languages, and/or <br>

an understanding of the roles of diachrony and contact in shaping language. <br>

The ideal candidate will have the potential to link the theoretical <br>

implications of his or her research to other sub-disciplines in <br>

linguistics, and to interact with colleagues and students across <br>

disciplinary boundaries at UCSB. The ability to engage with the <br>

departmental focus on functional and usage-based approaches to linguistic <br>

explanation is essential. Candidates must have demonstrated excellence in <br>

teaching and will be expected to teach a range of graduate and <br>

undergraduate courses in general linguistics and field linguistics, <br>

including a year-long graduate field methods sequence. The Ph.D. in <br>

linguistics or a related field is required. The degree is normally required <br>

by the time of appointment. The position will remain open until filled.<br>
