Hi all,

Thanks, Jean Luc, for introducing yourself to the List. I just spoke with John Barbry in Marksville about plans for the conference. Sounds like they are willing to provide conference facilities and a reduced rate block of rooms at the Paragon Hotel-Casino resort (see their website: http://www.paragoncasinoresort.com/Home.aspx. We can charge a minimal conference fee for catered drinks and snacks. The nearest commercial airport is Alexandria International (AEX), which is 45 minutes from Marksville. The Resort could provide shuttle service to and from that airport. Any other airports (e.g., Baton Rouge, New Orleans) you'd have to rent a car. (Baton Rouge is about a 90-min. drive; New Orleans 2.5-hr. drive.)

John Barbry would like me to write a formal letter to the Tribe requesting a couple of dates for the proposed conference. I think first part of June is best, June 5-7 or 12-15. What do you all think? (May is out of the question, since they have their Pow-Wow in mid-May and then Memorial Day holiday.)

I will be in charge of call for abstracts and conference scheduling. The Tribe will primarily be in charge of the logistics in Marksville.

On an a side note, the Poverty Point archaeological site (ca. 1500 BCE) was recently designated an Unesco World Heritage Site and is about 2.5 hours from Marksville. We could possibly make this a "field trip" perhaps a day before or after the conference for those who may be interested. Something else to think about.
