RESEARCH ASSISTANT FOR STUDIES OF ASL AND THE BRAIN

The Salk Institute has a new opening for an additional Deaf or Hearing
Research Assistant in the
Laboratory for Cognitive Neurosciences to build up a team of scientists
(hearing and deaf) investigate
how the brain processes sign language. The new program of NIH funded
research involves a) helping
test deaf life long signers who have injuries to the left or the right
hemisphere of the brain and matched
deaf controls, as well as b) helping with experiments that use
functional magnetic resonance imaging
(fMRI) as a converging tool with deaf signers to understand the brain
bases of sign language.

Applicants will work with a team of deaf and hearing people whose
primary interest is in sign
language and other cognitive functions of deaf signers. Candidates may
have a B.A. and some initial
research experience (this could be in psychology, neuropsychology, or
related fields). Applicants must
have the capacity for interdisciplinary research and growth. Salary
dependent on background,
education, and research experience. Native or near native knowledge of
American Sign Language is
required.
