POSITION VACANT: LECTURER IN SIGN LINGUISTICS, UNIVERSITEIT VAN AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS

De Faculty of Humanities (FGW) was set up in 1997 as the result of a fusion between the Faculty of Letters, Philosophy and Theology. As a result of this fusion lecturers, researchers and students have come together who are interested in the study of the human mind as expressed in language and thought, history and culture and religion and art. The Faculty has strong links with its cultural and social surroundings, is a leading center of research and offers a wide range of degree courses. As well as having many links with cultural organizations in Amsterdam the Faculty also has a clear international orientation in teaching and research. This diversity requires a flexible organization in teaching, research and staff with room for individual initiative and development. The Faculty has six sections: Art and Cultural Studies, Dutch studies, Languages and Literature, Theology and Religious studies, and Philosophy.

Sign Linguistics has been both offered in courses and the subject of research at the Universiteit van Amsterdam for the last fifteen years. Two years ago a specialist program was created together with an accompanying chair. There is now a vacancy in the section Languages and Literature for:

A university lecturer in Sign Linguistics m/f for 38 hours* per week

TASKS

Teaching

Teaching courses in the area of sign linguistics, in particular in the areas of sign phonology, lexicon and grammar also from a theoretical perspective; teaching in the area of psycholinguistics, language acquisition and sociolinguistics of sign languages. Tutoring practical placements and final year theses.

Research

Carrying out own research in sign linguistics; collaborating on developing research projects and plans.

Administration

Carrying out administrative tasks within the section Language and Literature, for example informing prospective students on the specialization Sign Language of the Netherlands; supervision of the sign language lecturers and research assistants.

REQUIREMENTS

A Ph.D. in linguistics in particular sign linguistics; teaching experience in this area; good teaching qualities; interest in and experience with carrying out research; publications in well known journals or books; positive attitude towards and ability to work well in a team; interest in and ability to work with organizations outside the university; excellent knowledge of a sign language, preferably Sign Language of the Netherlands; good knowledge of English.

The appointment is for a period of 2 years.

The salary is minimally in scale 10 and maximally scale 12.

The person appointed should be prepared to begin in march 2001 or soon thereafter.
