trouble subscribing

A student advisee of mine is having trouble subscribing to this list. She says
she sent the command
     SUB SLLING-L [her name]
in the body of a message to
     LISTSERV at ADMIN.HUMBERC.ON.CA
and got the reply
     No LISTSERV list by the name of "SLLING-" is known to exist. Note that
lists
     can be marked "confidential" and that the existence of such lists is
usually
     known only to the server that is actually hosting it.

.... as if she had misspelled "SLLING-L". But she says she copied and pasted it
out of my message to her, as I just did now from the transcript of our
electronic conversation into this email.

This happened twice in the past half-hour. What could be going wrong?
