ASL for infants

If I'm not mistaken, one of the reasons that the "gesture before speech"
theory came about was because fossil records showed that early humans
were incapable of speech as we know it, yet archeologists claim that
there is sufficient evidence that _communication_ took place. The
artifacts discovered make some believe that there had to have been a
means to transmit culture.

Personally, I don't know. I haven't read enough. Was this in Armstrong
and Stokoe??
