Supporting Deaf People 2004
An International Online Conference
February 12th - 19th 2004

Themes: 'Ethics & Professionalism' and 'Language'

Following the highly successful first Supporting Deaf People online
conference in 2001, which had 120 delegates from 10 different countries,
the second conference will be held in February 2004.

This is a call for papers for this conference. These should be no more
than 1500 words long and relate to the above themes.

Papers will be featured on the site for four days and a seminar
discussion on the theme will be running simultaneously. What we expect
from the authors who will be selected is that they produce the paper
(with references), a summary/abstract of the paper and that they log
into and make contributions to the conference each day during the four
days that their paper will be featured.

Payment for this is available, with free conference attendance for
authors of selected papers.

To register an interest, discuss ideas and for further information
contact Judith Mole (judithm at directlearn.co.uk).
CEUs are available for U.S. contributors.

Deadline for registering an interest to submit a paper is 15th November
2003.

Supporting Deaf People 2004 - An International Online Conference
February 12th - 19th 2004

Conference Themes: 'Ethics & Professionalism' and 'Language'.

Themes:

The conference will have two major themes - 'Ethics and Professionalism'
and 'Language'. Each theme will have a key note presenter, supporting
papers, seminar discussions, a materials bank with further information
as well as an online chat room.

Who is the conference for?

The conference is aimed at all those involved in the support of Deaf
people and Deaf people themselves. This includes: Sign Language
Interpreters, Communication Support Workers, trainee interpreters and
CSWs, lecturers for Deaf people, interpreting agencies and support
service providers as well as Deaf students, clients and trainers of
interpreters.

What is an online conference?

An online conference uses the internet as a conference 'venue'.
Participants are given a password to access the various conference and
seminar groups as well as a live chat room. Participants can log in at
any time from any place and the conference is text based, so no extra
equipment/software is needed. Anyone with access to the internet can
participate. Participants will have the opportunity to have a look at
the conference site in advance of the conference to familiarise
themselves with the layout of the site.

Why have an online conference?

Traditional conferences require a physical location so participants have
to travel and stay in a particular place. Using an online conference
means that participants can access the conference from anywhere in the
world and can do this at any time - whether it is midnight in Britain or
11am in Australia. Participants will be able to log on as little or as
much as they wish to - before, after or during office hours. A summary
of discussions will be available each day.
