British Sign Language Corpus Project: Postgraduate/postdoctoral  
research assistant
1 year post (Ref. CPRA1a)

Grade 6/7 Range £24,403-£28,289 + £2,572 London weighting. Level and  
grade appointed is dependent on qualifications, skills and experience  
as detailed in the person specification. The post will begin in  
January 2008, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The British Sign Language Corpus Project is a new project funded by  
the Economic and Social Research Council that aims to create a corpus  
(i.e., a computerised collection of annotated language recordings) of  
British Sign Language (BSL), and to conduct corpus-based  
investigations of aspects of the vocabulary, grammar and  
sociolinguistics of BSL. The project is led by the Deafness Cognition  
and Language (DCAL) Research Centre at University College London,  
with co-investigators and collaborators based at Heriot-Watt  
University (Scotland), Queens University Belfast (Northern Ireland),  
the University of Bristol (England), Bangor University (Wales) and  
Macquarie University (Australia). You can see more information about

A well-organised person with a degree in a relevant area and fluency  
in BSL (or a related sign language) is required to assist the project  
director in the day-to-day management of the BSL Corpus Project.  
Duties include working with deaf community fieldworkers in  
participant recruitment and data collection as well as assisting the  
project team with the management of the project digital video data  
and metadata.
