POST 1. DCAL GRADUATE INTERNSHIP 

 

POST 2. POST-GRADUATE/POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN  LANGUAGE CONTACT AND
BILINGUALISM (SIGN LANGUAGE)

 

DCAL, established in 2006 with £4m of funding for its first 5 years from the
Economic and Social Research Council, is a unique interdisciplinary research
centre devoted to the study of deafness and sign language. Professor Bencie
Woll is the Centre Director (Professor Gabriella Vigliocco and Dr Gary
Morgan are co-directors). Within the newly established division of
Psychology and Language Sciences, DCAL is part of the Cognitive, Perceptual
and Brain Sciences Research Department, that offers a top research and
teaching environment (receiving a 5* in the last nationwide Research
Assessment Exercise). DCAL has nearly 40 research staff, students and
associates, about 1/3 of whom are Deaf.

 

 

POST 1. DCAL 1-YEAR GRADUATE INTERNSHIP 

Interested in a career in research on deafness and sign language?  

*	Learn first hand what is involved in conducting research in the
areas of sign linguistics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, and language
development in the context of deafness and sign language.  
*	Gain valuable experience for a future post-graduate degree in these
and/or related areas.  

 

This post will provide opportunities to develop skills and knowledge leading
to research in fields such as sign linguistics, psycholinguistics,
sociolinguistics, and the development of language and communication, where
the experience of deaf people is critical to the development of scientific
theories and their effective application. The intern will work with
researchers on a number of different DCAL projects, and following completion
of the internship, will be expected to take up post-graduate research
leading to a Master’s and PhD. Candidates should have a good honours degree
in one of DCAL’s subject areas (e.g. linguistics, psychology, Deaf studies)
or in one with applications to DCAL’s areas of research (e.g. computational
engineering), be fluent in British Sign Language (BSL), and be a member of
the Deaf community. 

 

GRADE AND SALARY RANGE 1 year full-time; salary grade 6 point 24 (£23,692 +
£2649 London Allowance). Start date: 1 September 2008

POST 2. POST-GRADUATE/POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN  LANGUAGE CONTACT AND
BILINGUALISM (SIGN LANGUAGE)

Applications are invited for a post-graduate researcher at the Deafness
Cognition and Language (DCAL) Research Centre at UCL
<http://www.dcal.ucl.ac.uk>, to undertake research linked to projects within
the Deaf Individual and the Community strand. These include language contact
between British Sign Language and English, unimodal (2 sign languages) and
bimodal (sign language/spoken language) bilingualism in deaf and hearing
people, language and culture, and aptitudes for learning BSL. 

 

GRADE AND SALARY RANGE:  

This post is offered at Grade 6 pt 26 (£25135 plus £2649 London Weighting
Allowance) from September 2008 to December 2010.  An appointment may be made
at a higher level for a candidate with a PhD. Consideration will be given to
a part-time appointment or secondment from another post. There is
flexibility in relation to the start date.
