Reply to 3. Status of Sign Languages

Dear Barbara,

there is my article "On the legal status of sign languages: a
commented compilation of resources " in Current Issues in Language
Planning Vol. 10, No. 3, August 2009, 351 – 354.
Since then, the EUD compilation (Wheatley & Pabsch) has been
published, which is excellent and up-to-date for Europe, much better
than Timmermans' book for the Council of Europe.
If you email me privately I can send you the PDF of the WFD report
(Haualand and Allen) on "Deaf People and Human Rights" from 2009,
which focuses on many regions/continents but Europe and Nothern America.
For working with students I also recommend Timothy Reagans new book
published by GUP.
I would be extremely reluctant to consult ethnologue: so much ist
still simply wrong (e.g. no one outside of ethnologue has ever called
our SL "Austro-Hungarian", but for some reason they insist on doing so).

best, verena
