Symposium on Sociolinguistic Variation in Signed and Spoken Languages of the Asia-Pacific region

University of Central Lancashire, Preston, UK

12-13 July 2019

Keynote presenters:

Dr. Rachel McKee (Victoria University of Wellington)

Dr. Susanne Maria Michaelis (University of Leipzig)

Deadline for abstracts: 30 March 2019

There is a rich array of sociolinguistic research on spoken languages in the Asia-Pacific region. In comparison, much less research has been conducted on sign languages in this region from a sociolinguistic perspective, but the body of work in this area is growing nicely. This Symposium seeks to bring together sociolinguists and others who conduct related research, to share research from both spoken and signed languages of the Asia-Pacific region, which is defined as the whole of Asia as well as the countries of the Pacific rim.

Areas of interest include:

• language variation and change
• bilingual and multilingual practices, e.g. code-switching and code-blending
• dialectology
• Variationist sociolinguistics
• variation and language attitudes
• variation and language ideologies
• styles, identity and social meaning

The languages of the symposium are English and International Sign/British Sign Language. There is no registration fee for this event.

We welcome abstracts of one page (including data and references), which should be submitted in electronic form (Word or PDF) to islandsinfo at uclan.ac.uk<mailto:islandsinfo at uclan.ac.uk>.

The deadline for submissions is 30 March 2019. Notification of acceptance will be made by 15 April 2019. For further information, please contact Nick Palfreyman at islandsinfo at uclan.ac.uk<mailto:islandsinfo at uclan.ac.uk>.

This Symposium is convened by the iSLanDS Institute. We are grateful to the Leverhulme Trust and UCLan for their support.
