<BR><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT COLOR="#000000" FACE="Times New Roman">The Amsterdam Center for Language and Communication (ACLC) focuses on the study of both functionally and formally oriented linguistic research. This research is carried out in the following project groups: </FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT COLOR="#000000" FACE="Times New Roman">Functional grammar; </FONT></SPAN>
<BR><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT COLOR="#000000" FACE="Times New Roman">Generative linguistics; </FONT></SPAN>
<BR><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT COLOR="#000000" FACE="Times New Roman">Cognition, pragmatics and semantics; </FONT></SPAN>
<BR><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT COLOR="#000000" FACE="Times New Roman">Speech communication and phonetics; </FONT></SPAN>
<BR><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT COLOR="#000000" FACE="Times New Roman">Discourse analysis and text structure; </FONT></SPAN>
<BR><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT COLOR="#000000" FACE="Times New Roman">Language variation, language contact and language change; </FONT></SPAN>
<BR><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT COLOR="#000000" FACE="Times New Roman">First language acquisition and language pathology; </FONT></SPAN>
<BR><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT COLOR="#000000" FACE="Times New Roman">Second language acquisition. </FONT></SPAN>
</P>
<P><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT COLOR="#000000" FACE="Times New Roman">There are also special theme groups in which researchers from several project groups participate in the fields of Typology, Sign languages and Creole studies. ‘The Language Blueprint’ functions as an important interface between the different research groups. From the project and theme groups seven PhD projects have been proposed for which candidates may apply. </FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT COLOR="#000000" FACE="Times New Roman">One of these projects is: ‘</FONT></SPAN><SPAN LANG="en-us"><FONT FACE="Times New Roman">Phonology and its relationship to the lexicon in Dutch Sign Language (NGT) first and second language acquisition.’</FONT></SPAN><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT COLOR="#000000" FACE="Times New Roman"> </FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT COLOR="#000000" FACE="Times New Roman">Candidates may apply for more than one project. Note that candidates may also formulate their own proposal for a project on condition that this can be embedded into ‘The Language Blueprint’. From all applications the two best candidates will be selected.</FONT> </SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><B><FONT FACE="Times New Roman">Tasks</FONT></B></SPAN>
<BR><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT FACE="Times New Roman">The PhD student needs to carry out the research within four years and needs to write a dissertation.</FONT></SPAN>

<BR><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT FACE="Times New Roman">MA in linguistics, obtained no longer than five years ago.</FONT></SPAN>

<P><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><B><FONT FACE="Times New Roman">Position</FONT></B></SPAN>
<BR><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT FACE="Times New Roman">The PhD student will be appointed as ‘assistant in opleiding (aio)’ for a period of four years (full time) at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Amsterdam under the terms of employment currently valid for the Faculty.</FONT></SPAN></P>
