Feel free to post the response that follows.</div><div><br class="webkit-block-placeholder"></div><div>The apparent lack of phonological structure we have noticed is based not only on a lack of minimal pairs, but on a kind of variation in the production of signs that we are not used to seeing in more established sign languages, and on a lack of phonological processes that systematically affect meaningless units. We are aware that the possibility that ABSL has not developed a phonological system is not trivial, and we are working on several studies of different kinds to investigate it further. The problem raises interesting questions about phonology, phonetics, variation, and data in sign language in general, questions that have never been addressed.</div><div><br class="webkit-block-placeholder"></div><div>Best,</div><div>Wendy </div><div><br class="webkit-block-placeholder"></div><div><br class="webkit-block-placeholder"></div><div><br class="webkit-block-placeholder"></div><div><div><div> <span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: separate; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 0px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: none; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0; "><div><div style="word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; -webkit-line-break: after-white-space; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 12px; "><div><br class="Apple-interchange-newline">Professor Wendy Sandler</div><div>Director, Sign Language Research Lab</div><div>Rabin Building</div><div>University of Haifa</div><div>31905 Haifa</div><div>Israel</div><div>tel: +972-4-824-9395</div><div>fax: +972-4-824-9958</div><div><br class="webkit-block-placeholder"></div><div><a href="http://sandlersignlab.haifa.ac.il">http://sandlersignlab.haifa.ac.il</a>/</div><div><br class="khtml-block-placeholder"></div>Department of English Language <div> and Literature<div>University of Haifa</div><div>31905 Haifa</div><div>Israel</div><div><br class="webkit-block-placeholder"></div></div></span></div></div><div><br class="webkit-block-placeholder"></div></span><br class="Apple-interchange-newline"> </div><br></div></div></div></blockquote></div><br></div></div></body></html>
