Four years ago, an e-mail was posted (below), requesting the sign language linguistic community to provide feedback to Ethnologue so that the sign language data could be updated.

The Ethnologue website states:
"If you have corrections or updates to the content of the Ethnologue, please write to the Ethnologue Editor."

The Ethnologue editor, according to the website, may be contacted by writing to:
Editor, Ethnologue
c/o International Linguistics Center
7500 West Camp Wisdom Road
Dallas, Texas 75236 USA

or by e-mail: Ethnologue Editor (which I understand to be Editor(underscore)Ethnologue@sil.org).
(that is, Editor_Ethonologue "at" sil.org)

Thank you.

> From: albert_bickford@SIL.ORG
> To: slling-l@majordomo.valenciacc.edu
> Subject: [slling-l] signed languages in the Ethnologue
> Date: Wed, 27 Oct 2004 12:36:53 -0700
>
> Dear colleagues:
>
> SIL's Ethnologue (www.ethnologue.com) is an attempt to list all the world's
> languages, and since the 1988 edition, signed languages have been included.
> At TISLR 8, I became aware that there are ongoing concerns among sign
> language researchers about the quality of this information.
>
> In a resource of this sort, the quality of information can vary widely from
> one language to the next. The Ethnologue depends heavily on input from
> people who have first-hand and reliable knowledge about individual
> languages. The readers of this list certainly fall in this category, and so
> I would like to encourage people to check the Ethnologue listings for the
> signed languages you know something about. You can find a
> complete list of all the signed languages currently in the Ethnologue at
> http://www.ethnologue.com/show_family.asp?subid=1.
> (The Ethnologue uses the designation "Deaf sign languages" to distinguish
> these languages from artificial signing systems.)
>
> If you have comments, additions, or corrections, please contact the new
> Ethnologue editor, Paul Lewis, by means of the feedback form on the
> Ethnologue website:
> Be sure to identify who you are and the basis for your comments, such as the
> type of experience you've had with the language, any published sources, etc.
>
> If you've submitted feedback in the past, but it hasn't yet appeared on the
> website, it may just be because the site is only updated when a new print
> edition is published. (This happens about once every four years, but SIL is
> working on a system so that eventually, the website can be updated more
> frequently.) The 15th edition, edited by Ray Gordon, is currently in press,
> but due to lack of personnel, it is not clear when it will be posted on the
> website. I'll try and remember to announce when this happens, so if you
> submitted changes that were incorporated in the 15th edition, you can see
> how they came out and submit further corrections or clarifications then. In
> the meantime, please feel free to contribute any information at any time,
> and it will be incorporated in the next edition.
>
> Albert Bickford
> SIL-International
>
>
> To unsubscribe: send mail to <majordomo@majordomo.valenciacc.edu>
> with "unsubscribe slling-l" in the body of the message.
> -----------------------------------------------------------------
> Hosted by Valencia Community College, Orlando, FL
> http://valenciacc.edu
>
>

Color coding for safety: Windows Live Hotmail alerts you to suspicious email. Sign up today.
