<font size="4"><b>International Seminar on Sign Language Research<br>“Towards Deaf Empowerment through Sign Language Research”</b></font><br><br>One of the central goals of research on sign language (SL) is the provision of new and relevant ideas which contribute towards empowering the Deaf community and building an equal platform<br>
for the promotion of their culture and the fulfillment of their needs in key areas such as education and employment.<br><br>The seminar sets the stage for academics, researchers, and leaders of the Deaf community to discuss issues in SL research with international speakers and researchers reporting on sign language research in each of their respective countries. The intended outcome of this sharing will be a more comprehensive understanding of the nature, development, and future prospects of the field.<br>
<br>Participation fee : RM 100<br>Deaf/ Students (Local) : RM 50<br><br>In addition, the seminar will be followed by a three day SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETING WORKSHOP to be held from 1–3 June 2009 at the same venue.<br><br>
The Interpreting workshop will focus on three main areas:<br><br>A: The Professional Sign Language Interpreter<br>• Language, Linguistics and Interpreting<br>• The Sign Language Interpreter; Code of Ethics and the Deaf Community<br>
<br>B: Skills Development & Practicum<br>• Use of Classifiers in Sign Language Interpreting<br>• Self & Peer Evaluation & Networking<br>• Practical: Consecutive and Simultaneous Interpreting<br>• Legal Interpreting & Documentation<br>
• Activities to enhance self learning<br><br>C: Research and Technology<br>• Innovative and new technology in Sign language research and interpreting<br><br>Fee: RM 200 (Local) ; Sign Language students: RM 150 (Local)<br>
