Dear SW List:
I am back online. I am fine. And thank you for your email messages
about the fires in San Diego. It is true, that on international TV, on
CNN, they have reported about the wild fires in San Diego yesterday. We
have not had any rain for 180 days, with only ten inches in the whole
year. Southern California is a desert next to the ocean. So if someone
throws a cigarette into the dry bushes, wild fires spring up and they
spread very very fast. This happens in New Mexico too...I know the
teachers from Albuquerque had scary fires recently too.

I have lived in southern California since I was 9 years old, and
although I have seen some bad wild fires, this one is the worst I
personally have seen...It is raining fire-ashes all around us. The
ground is covered with ash over an area as large as the whole country
of Denmark. Hundreds of people are without homes. Yesterday I could see
the flames of other homes burning, from my window. I packed my car,
ready to evacuate. And the wind changed in our favor, and we are the
lucky ones! Our house is still standing!

What does one take, when you are forced to leave your house quickly?
Family Pictures. And hard drives with backed-up data...ha! I wanted to
put the computers in the car, but they were too heavy...so I have a
back seat filled with hard drives - smile...I am now moving them back
into the house. The air smells like the last days of Pompeii...but all
is well, and those who lost their homes will build again.

Feel free to ask questions on the SW List once more.... I will try to
answer the best I can...I have missed you all!
