Did you see the programme about the Deaf couple having a baby recently? At
the start of the wedding ceremony the vicar used this sign. "You'll have to
excuse my signing, it's crap!" The congregation laughed  :)

However, this sign is also used in serious contexts to mean "pathetic". So
it would be wrong, I think, to criticise it when used earnestly.
